Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross 1939

The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was an additional class of the Iron Cross on 1 September 1939 by Chancellor Adolf Hitler founded. It took the place of the earlier Order Pour le Merite. The Knight's Cross was the second highest military award in the 3rd Reich. The highest award was the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded only one time to Herman Goering. The Knight's Cross in the 3rd Reich enjoyed a hero status and were glorified and clamped as role models for young people for propaganda purposes.
The award period there were several extensions to the Knight's Cross. On 3 June 1940 was donated to the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross. On 28 September 1941 extended the Knight's Cross with oak leaves with swords and oak leaves with swords and brilliants. The last expansion took place on 29 Held in December 1944. After the assassination attempt of July 20, 1944 some of Knight's Crosses were stripped in a show trial.
