In February 1941, the German Afrika Korps arrived under the command of Erwin Rommel in Tripoli to the Italians to provide military assistance. Against the orders of Hitler, who was more busy with preparations for the Ostlandfeldzug and the Afrika Korps regarded only as "blocking force" to stabilize the Italian front, Rommel undertook a daring reconnaissance push towards Cyrenaica.

With cunning and advanced tactics he brought the British completely by surprise when painful losses, ultimately failed because of the material superiority of the Allies and the insufficient own supply.

The grueling battle for Benghazi, Derna, Tobruk and El Alamein in this film come alive. Contemporaries of the hard missions in the Libyan desert. Rare footage, also from unpublished personal archives show the lives of German soldiers on the front in North Africa. New footage of the former battlefields round off this unique documentary. On the trip to Tripoli, Benghazi and Tobruk discovered the film crew in the desert the abandoned headquarters of Erwin Rommel, crossed dangerous minefields and came across to this day undiscovered weapons cache
