In a Baltic expedition in April 2003, the wreck of a German freighter is found. Using a 3-D sonar and underwater shots the ship is identified as "Goya", on the 16th April 1945 was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine and sank within seven minutes. The "Goya" ripped more than 7,000 people with in depth. MDR is a team aboard the expedition ship and filmed the wreck in 76 meters depth. In an exciting documentation is meticulously reconstructed as 1945 came to tragedy. The film features rare historical documents and witnesses can have their say, who survived the disaster. Among them is the radio operator of "Goya" Fred Buttner, and the mechanics of the dinghy the "Goya", John Ruehmling.

Like the other two German war refugee ships, the "Steuben" and the "Wilhelm Gustloff", remains the "Goya" a Seekriegsgrab and should not be lifted. When asked why one of the greatest maritime disasters of all time so far was hardly a subject responds expedition leader Ulrich Restemeyer: "It's simple: On board the Titanic were half the passengers millionaires. In addition, a great fuss was made about the maiden voyage and the unsinkable ship. Then came 1912 about 1,200 people were killed. The "Goya" in the more than 7,000 people were dead, fell into oblivion because the accident was embedded in the state of war. "And the war no one wanted to hear.
