On 1 October 1934 Heinz Guderian was appointed "chief of staff of the command of the force driving forces." First goal was planning the construction of three armored divisions with six armored regiments. Under these measures was established in the fall of 1936 in training camp Zossen also the 8th Panzer Regiment, the 3rd Panzer Division was under.

On 3 September 1939 for the Panzer Regiment 8 of the war. The Association of the Second Army Corps of the 4th Army went on Danzig territory. In the rapidly advancing with the Wolfsangel marked as regimental character chariot pierced west Wizna the Polish fortifications.

On 9 May 1940 the command met to use one in the western campaign. That same night, the regiment continued the march towards Luxembourg.

After the "lightning victories" in Poland and France in May 1941, the regiment was shipped to Tripoli to reinforce Rommel's Afrika Korps. Along the coastline, it was the forced march towards Tobruk. After many wins the material superiority of the enemy in 1943 forced Rommel to retreat to Tunisia. The 8th Panzer Regiment formed the rear guard of the "Army Group Africa", and secured with heavy losses to the withdrawal of all troops.
