lieutenant
Squadron captain of the 9./JG52 of the Karaya squadron from 02.09.1943 to 30. 09. 1943. Group commander of the I./JG52 from 01.02.1945 to 08.05.1945

"Bubi" after graduating from high school, he joined the Air Force on October 1, 1940, came to the Air War School in Berlin Gatow on March 1, 1941 and was trained as a fighter pilot and was promoted to lieutenant on March 31, 1942 . 08. 1942 to Erg. Gr. East.

Then on October 10, 1942 to the Eastern Front to 7./JG 52. He was assigned to Sergeant Roßmann there as a squad pilot. When it came to the first enemy flight, almost everything went wrong with him. He broke away from his bandage without permission, vanished and crash-landed and destroyed his machine after all of his fuel had evaporated. As a result, it was shared with the very experienced Oltn. Krupinski and then Fw. Grislawski, who then really took care of Hartmanns, like many other young pilots before, Grislawski, gave him the nickname “Bubi” which he then carried throughout his life.

He achieved his first victory in the air on November 5th, 1942. He shot down a Russian IL-2 at close range. The plane exploded and parts of the wreck hit his Me-109, forcing him to land in the immediate vicinity of his first victim. On July 17th, 1943 he got 7 kills in the offensive at Kursk. And on 08/20/1943 he achieved his 89th and 90th victory in the air.

A good month later he shot down a Russian fighter plane over the Donets area, but only minutes later had to make an emergency landing over enemy territory as a result of an anti-aircraft gun hit and was captured. However, he managed to free himself from captivity during a Stuka attack and to regain his own lines after two days. After a three-week break, he continued his winning run.

On September 2nd, 1943 he became Staffelkapitän 9./JG 52 "Karaya" and on September 13th, 1943 he received the Cup of Honor and on October 17th, 1943 the German Cross in Gold. October 1943 was also very successful with the 33rd aerial victories. On October 29, 1943, after his 148th victory in the air, he was awarded the Knight's Cross and on March 2, 1944 for his 200th victory in the air, the oak leaves and was promoted to first lieutenant, after his 266th victory in the air he was awarded the Knight's Cross swords. Within four weeks he shot down 78th Russian aircraft. On August 23, 1944 he defeated eight opponents, the next day eleven, which brought him 301th kills.

On August 25, 1944 he was awarded the oak leaves with swords and diamonds for the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, which was presented to him on August 26, 1944 in the FHQ Wolfsschanze in East Prussia. After the award of the diamonds, the mandatory enemy flight ban and a command to the test command Me 262 followed. He was promoted to captain on September 1, 1944 and exactly two months later he became commander I./JG 52. On March 1, 1945 he received the command himself to report in Lechfeld for retraining and instruction on the Me-262 jet fighters. From 25.03.1945 he was back at the front of his old squadron and took over the I./JG 52 as group commander.

On April 17th, 1945 he achieved the 350th victory in the air, his last and thus 352nd kill on May 8th, 1945 over Brno / Czech Republic. On May 8, 1945, after the surrender, the JG 52 went into American captivity near Pisek, the JG 52 and around 6,000 other soldiers from other units, but were extradited to the Russians on May 24, 1945 and had to go into Russian captivity. Bubi was then promoted to Major by Lieutenant Colonel Hermann Graf after May 14, 1945. (Proof of Rudi Trenkel's marriage certificate) It was not until October 15, 1955 that Chancellor Adenauer managed to bring him and the last German prisoners of war home from Russia.

Hartmann returned to active service as a major in 1956 in the Bundeswehr Air Force and was trained as a jet pilot in Luke-Texas (USA). As a major, he took over the JG 71 “Richthofen” in Ahlhorn as a commodore in the summer of 1959 to 1962. On December 12, 1960 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and came to the Air Force Office in Portz-Wahn near Cologne. Promoted to colonel 7 years later. On September 30, 1970, he left the Air Force at his own request.

Excerpt from the Adler zu Bubis 263rd aerial victory and the sword award ceremony. On the photo to the left of Bubi, the Karaya standard of the 9th season of JG 52 can be seen very well. In the middle with the Karaya heart with arrow, as well as the squadron and group badges.
