Rivers form natural defense lines and the first task of any defender is to destroy strategic bridges across them. This happened at the start of World War II as German troops advanced across Europe. Although German blitzkrieg often progressed so quickly that the defenders were overwhelmed before they had a chance to demolish bridges, others were successfully blown up. This is where combat engineers – called pioneers in Germany – came into play. They were equipped with various tools for bridging waterways, with pontoon bridges being one of the fastest means. Dragon's new 1:35 scale set includes such a pontoon system.
The new Premium Edition item is an extensive set that includes no fewer than four inflatable boats and two associated bridge systems. When connected, they are able to span a small watercourse. The rafts are well defined and line lengths are offered to add detail to the ties. The bridge paths and railings are also precisely depicted and have a delicate wood grain. To equip this pontoon system, the set includes a total of 13 soldiers, four of which are infantrymen and nine pioneers. Some of the latter also feature bonus hands that allow for convenient pose switching. The comprehensive set is ideal for modelers wanting to recreate an early war scene, perhaps in France or Russia. These all-conquering German soldiers advance inexorably, and not even collapsed bridges can slow their lightning-fast advance!
