introduction

After the First World War, there were countless unique concepts to deal with the no man's land problem. Another unique idea is the rolling or ball tank. The Germans were the first to try out a working prototype, the Treffas car, in 1917. Another concept came in 1936 with the “Tumbleweed Tank,” designed by Texas inventor A.J. Richardson. It never left the drawing board.
The Kugelpanzer or Rollzeug (literally translated as “Kugeltank” and “Rolling Vehicle”) is listed in the Kubinka Tank Museum as object no. 37 and is visually similar to its Treffas-Wagen predecessor. It is the only known, still existing example of one of these spherical tanks. It is a rarity among military vehicles.

The vehicle was captured by the Red Army. The most widely accepted theory is that it was sent to Japan sometime in the 1940s as part of the German technology exchange program and was captured in Manchuria in 1945. However, another report states that it was captured along with the infamous mouse at the Kummersdorf test site
