Product introduction:
Immediately after demonstrating the experimental 400 to Hitler on October 24, the Luftwaffe ordered 100 to be mounted on 8-ton tractor chassis on November 21, 1939. Originally the 2 cm Flak 38 quadruple was secured with a central swivel mount; later base supports and ratchets were used to secure the normal floor attachment. From 1942 an armored radiator guard and a crew cabin were introduced to protect against shrapnel and small arms fire. The first series of 100 examples was completed from April 1940 to mid-1941. Production continued at a low rate of 10 per month in early 1942 and was accelerated in August 1942 to accommodate the increased amount of Allied air power. In total, around 750 to 800 units were produced by the end of December 1944.
