The 5cm Flak 41 was a 50mm anti-aircraft gun manufactured for intermediate zone defense above the range of the light 37mm guns but below the ceiling of the heavy 75mm and larger guns. Although development of the weapon began as early as 1936, it progressed slowly and the contract was not awarded to Rheinmetall-Borsig until 1940. The weapon was produced in two models and used to defend important industrial facilities. Neither was a success and both had the same mistakes. The traverse rate was too slow for fast-moving targets and the gun proved underpowered, although the propellant fired a powerful shot that could blind the target, even in broad daylight. A total of 60 examples of the 5 cm Flak 41 were manufactured from 1941. Some of these were still in use in 1945.
